Fairy tales
According to far back ancestry tales,
a nice and lovely girl Kačenka (Katie) dwells and gently
reigns over Orlické hory. Being as kindly and rightful as the highland
nature self - supporting uprights and purseless, punishing loafers
and dishonest fellows. At times, neighbouring upland monarch, Krakonoš,
arrives for a visit. He likes the pretty Kačenka, and would like
to carry her away to marry him. But she likes her mountains too
much and would never leave off. No matter how gracious and delicate
she may dismiss, Krakonoš feels deeply offended every time. Staring
mad, he sets into action all destructives domineered over. Throwing
thunder bolts and lightning strikes, he floods all creeks, brooks
and rivers, commits windbreaks and damage round about woodlands,
going back home to his northern mountain kingdom in a chafe. With
time the offence passes away, the furies vanish. Feeling lonely
and missing Kačenka, Krakonoš launch for woo again with the hope.
Still and all, what if he finally would get it made?
Thereabouts a legend about princess Kačenka. However
by another version, Kačenka is a good daughter of Krakonoš, and
both her and her husband Rampušák living in good accords with Papa
Krakonoš, so that he must get exited due to quite a different matters.
However, Rampušák (Icicle Man), bearded co-regent,
appears as lately as in beginning sixties (i.e. 1960) together with
a modern but already deep-rooted tradition. In the late March Rampušák
rides down the hills to Deštné, skiing on an old fashioned ski with
long curved spikes and a big stick, to say goodbye to the winter
ski season. For more than 20 years this event becomes a regular
entertainment.
